Seven seed phrase backup mistakes we still see
Backups fail quietly. Here are patterns that show up in Apigrid Lab drills and office hours. None of these require exotic attackers—just ordinary tools used carelessly.
- Cloud camera rolls. A quick photo “until I buy steel” becomes a permanent sync to every device on the account.
- Incomplete metal stamps. Missing tiles discovered only during a recovery rehearsal—sometimes years later.
- Ink on cheap paper in humid storage. Words blur; owners assume the backup is fine because the envelope is still sealed.
- Seed and location map in one notebook. Theft of a single object yields both the secret and the instructions.
- Unlabeled duplicates. Two plates, no legend—future-you gambles on which account they unlock.
- Chat apps as couriers. “Temporary” messages to yourself that remain searchable on a work laptop.
- Never rehearsed restores. Confidence without a timed drill is not verification.
