Private Key Storage Checklist

Use this as a living document. Tick items only when you can point to evidence—locations, dates, or a drill log. Educational material; Not Financial Advice.

Padlock representing secure storage

1. Inventory

  • List every wallet or key material you control, including abandoned test accounts.
  • Note which device or app currently holds signing capability.
  • Mark which items are high-impact if lost or leaked.
  • Record the last time you successfully signed with each primary device.

2. Backups

  • Confirm offline backups exist for each high-impact seed or key.
  • Label backups without writing the seed in the same notebook as the location map.
  • Ban cloud photos or chat apps as seed carriers.
  • Verify steel or paper media for missing words at least once a year.

3. Devices & travel

  • Separate seed media from the signing device during travel.
  • Document firmware update steps before applying them.
  • Wipe or retire devices with a written checklist, not memory.
  • Keep a minimal “away kit” packing list printed offline.

4. People & recovery

  • Name a deputy who knows where instructions live—not the seed itself.
  • Schedule a recovery rehearsal with a test wallet.
  • Log drill duration and gaps; assign owners for each gap.
  • Set the next verification date on a calendar you actually check.
